Hello! Happy Monday! Welcome to our Mommy Monday feature for this week! Each week, we interview a mom business owner and get to know her a little better! We like to find out how she balances life with children and a business! We also like to hear about the marketing strategies that are working for her! Hopefully, this provides a little bit of inspiration to all of the other hard working moms out there! If you’d like to be considered for this feature, send us an e-mail! We’d love to learn about your business, too!
Today’s mom entrepreneur is Valery Klassen.
What is your business?
Sun 7 Designs
When did you start your business?
After designing and sewing blankets as gifts for years; one day a friend of mine suggest that I sell them, so I did. I started my part-time business in 2008 and in October of 2012 I retired from the corporate world to focus on Sun 7 Designs. A baby blanket is such an important part of a little baby’s world. Few babies become toddlers without choosing a favorite blanket to cuddle with. They love to take their blankets with them everywhere, as it becomes a special friend long past baby years. My signature baby blankets are just the right size to snuggle up with or carry around, and being handmade, no two blankets are exactly alike.
What services/products do you offer?
I custom design one-of-a-kind personalized Minkee baby blankets and have just recently added other personalized items to my product line. All the items can be coordinated to match.
I offer a one-stop shop for the busy customer who doesn’t have the time to shop for the perfect baby gift. The customer chooses the blanket colours, design and adds the option of personalization; I create the blanket, wrap it, include a personal gift card and mail it to the recipient on behalf of my customer.
How do you balance family and business?
I’m fortunate that my family is grown now and I can devote most of my time to my business. However, that doesn’t mean that I’m not still “Mom’ to them and sometimes have to take time away to attend to family needs.
What advice do you have for other mom entrepreneurs?
Dream Big and whatever you decide to do, do it with all your heart. Contact as many people that would relate to your product as you can. Offer samples, giveaways, discounts and networking opportunities.
How do your market your business?
By far, customer referrals are my biggest piece of the pie in terms of selling my blankets. Almost all of my customers come back for more; either because of their child’s response to the blanket, or the special compliments the blanket gets at the baby shower.
Social media has helped me grow my business at a much faster rate than I ever would have thought possible. I have worked hard to grow my Facebook page, become a member of various networking websites, as well as set up profiles on Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google, Google Plus, 411, Yellow Pages etc.
