Hello! Happy Monday! Welcome to our Mommy Monday feature for this week! Each week, we interview a mom business owner and get to know her a little better! We like to find out how she balances life with children and a business! We also like to hear about the marketing strategies that are working for her! Hopefully, this provides a little bit of inspiration to all of the other hard working moms out there! If you’d like to be considered for this feature, send us an e-mail! We’d love to learn about your business, too!
Today’s mom entrepreneur is Peggy Vincent.
When did you start your business?
1994 – who can believe it’s been 20 years??
What services/products do you offer?
Inspirational, Motivational and Whimsical Glow in the Dark Pillowcases, Keepsake Calendars. I also offer Custom Screen Printing on just about any product:) I have printed for small business, birthday parties, family reunions, sports teams, schools and large corporations (marketing materials, conventions, etc).
How do you balance family and business?
Carefully. When I started my business I was single. Within 2 years I was married and pregnant – not to mention moved 1/2 way across the country. All of this changed my original goals. 22 months later I had our second child. Balancing family and having a home-based business is a trial and error process that you have to accept from the beginning. We chose family as my focus but when business took off “overnight” and the boys were young, we just figured out how to make it work…on a lot less sleep:) When the boys needed me to be mom more, I took on less business and while this wasn’t easy – THEY were the priority. As we move into another phase with 2 teenagers, we’ll see what the future will bring! At the end of every day, no matter how crazy it was, I love being able to do as much as I can with our boys at school, events, etc.
What advice do you have for other mom entrepreneurs?
Go into it with the idea that ANY thing can happen and will. Be realistic from the start about what your expectation are for your business, your kids & your husband. Honestly, it was EASIER when our boys were 1-6 then it has been since! A dream isn’t a plan. A plan for a few years out can always be adjusted to what life hands you, how business grows or slows, but it has to be a realistic plan. Find a mentor, whether it be another mompreneur, an on line resource or the small business development center in your area. For me, not having an close family and having just moved to another state was hard as a young mom and entrepreneur. I didn’t have anyone to lean on and just made it work:) Knowing what is right for you will vary, it did for me. At one point when business was booming, I couldn’t grow anymore – I knew it would take away from my family. That wasn’t easy, but it was right for us.
How do your market your business?
Currently I do some email marketing direct to my existing customers, trying to figure out how to make the most of Pinterest, Instagram and FB is my big challenge. I haven’t had a budget to do any type of outside marketing for a couple of years.
