Hello! Happy Monday! Welcome to our Mommy Monday feature for this week! Each week, we interview a mom business owner and get to know her a little better! We like to find out how she balances life with children and a business! We also like to hear about the marketing strategies that are working for her! Hopefully, this provides a little bit of inspiration to all of the other hard working moms out there! If you’d like to be considered for this feature, send us an e-mail! We’d love to learn about your business, too!
Today’s mom entrepreneur is Erica Blashill.
What is your business?
When did you start your business?
It's been an ongoing process! I have had my online shop (ericalyn.net) for several years but the school plaid hat addition is only about a year old, although the idea was in place for a long time. I spent a lot of time perfecting the hat design to make it truly reversible and exactly how it looked in my head.
What services/products do you offer?
I create reversible hats with up-cycled fabric brims. I use mainly up-cycled school uniform plaid fabrics. Many schools don't allow students to wear uniforms if they have any holes, snags or look worn out - so I put those uniforms to good use. And with each plaid hat sale from my website I donate $5 to a fund that purchases new uniforms for students in need.
How do you balance family and business?
It can be tough sometimes. Now that my kids are a little older, I find myself using my time at their sports practices to answer emails, research marketing ideas and sometimes even whipping up a hat or two. I also try to ask for their help & opinion on things so that they feel like they are a part of it. They have some great ideas!
What advice do you have for other mom entrepreneurs?
I find it helpful to make a list each morning of the top tasks that will immediately benefit my business. When I find myself distracted by something not on the list, I try to weigh whether it adds more value than those listed items. If not, I add it to the bottom of the list and get back to my listed tasks.
How do your market your business?
I am trying to do more with social media. I am active on twitter and I am working on Instagram and Pinterest to grow on those platforms. I am also reaching out to blogs and online groups that are relevant to see how I can work with them.
