What Does My Alexa Rank Mean & Why Is It Important?

What is an Alexa traffic ranking?

In basic terms, an Alexa Traffic Ranking is a ranking of how popular your website is. There are global rankings, comparing your site to those around the world. And, there are rankings by country. According to a recent survey, there are as many as 171 million active websites. The Alexa ranking is an approximation of where your site ranks in popularity among the other millions of sites. Market Mommy, for instance has a global ranking of 2,379,522, meaning there are approximately 2,379,521 websites that are more popular in the world.

How is an Alexa traffic ranking calculated?

According to Alexa support, “Alexa’s traffic estimates and ranks are based on the browsing behavior of people in our global data panel which is a sample of all internet users.” Therefore, it is an estimate based on a sample of users. It uses data over a rolling three month period, but ranks are updated daily. Most notably, Alexa (a subsidary of Amazon.com) uses unique visitors as well as page views. The sites with the highest combination of these is ranked number one, and so on.

Why is my Alexa ranking important?

You must keep in mind that an Alexa ranking is relative. Not everyone uses the Alexa toolbar; therefore it is not 100% reliable. But, what is? Rankings can be manipulated and purchased so it doesn’t necessarily represent the true status of your site. However, that being said, it does serve as a valuable comparison tool for your site and industry. It can be a great way to gauge your competitors and it gives you a higher leg to stand on if you are in the market of selling advertising.

How can I increase my Alexa ranking?

If you value your Alexa ranking and want to improve it, what should you do? You’ve heard this before, but content is key. Improve your ranking by improving your content and SEO efforts. Use keywords that your competitors are using and drive traffic to your site by having related sites link to yours. At the core is engaging and original content. If you produce that, the links, traffic and ultimately the ranking will follow.

How SEO Can Improve Your Chances of Landing a Job

Search Engine Optimisation is an online strategy used by individuals and businesses to increase website visitors, increase subscribers and increase sales. These are the most common reasons SEO tactics are used. However, there is another unusual and practical way to benefit from SEO. It’s become an effective method to land all types of jobs through the internet. Some ways SEO can improve your chances of landing a job include the following:

You Can Show Potential Employers What You’re Able to Do

Many modern employers approach the hiring process differently to their predecessors. They are more interested in what job applicants can do, rather than what qualifications they have or what college they attended. It’s a huge transformation. This change in the hiring process creates job opportunities for a wide range of people who may never have qualified in a particular area.

SEO is an excellent example of this. Many SEO experts are self-taught and have developed highly sought after skills and knowledge. If a potential employer or SEO company searches for an SEO expert and your website appears, this is clear proof that you’re qualified to do the job.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Keywords

It’s possible to land a lucrative contract or your dream job through the proper use of keywords. Keywords are the cornerstone of many types of SEO campaigns. They can also be used to get noticed by employers.

Keywords are words and phrases used to find various types of information online. Employers use them to search for potential employees. If you optimise all of your online content, there’s a greater chance you’ll be approached by someone who wants to hire you.

Some places where you can add optimised content and keywords about yourself include your personal blog, your business blog, forums, other people’s blogs and any other online outlet that lets you publish content online.

If for example you’re a graphic designer based in Manchester, you could include the keyword ‘Manchester graphic designer’ in content you post on your website or someone else’s. When someone looking for a graphic designer in the Manchester area types this keyword into a search engine, there’s a good chance you could feature in the search results.

Easy to Find Websites Impresses Potential Employers

You may not work in SEO. However, if you’re website is optimised by SEO professionals like Click Intelligence and is easy to find in the search engines, it’s a clear indication that you take your career seriously. When employers look for a freelancer or new employee and your website appears, there’s a good chance you’ll be called for an interview.

The modern workplace is much different than it was for previous generations. More people than ever are working in internet-related positions or trying to find work through the internet. SEO is a powerful way to get ahead of the crowd as you try to land the perfect job. Understanding how SEO works and how other people find information gives you an unfair advantage over other people looking for the same job as you.

Mommy Monday:: Castle Ink

Lauren Elward is the founder and CEO of Castle Ink; an office supply store that she founded in 2006. The store offers compatible and remanufactured printer ink cartridges and laser toner.

According to Elward, balancing family and business has been her greatest challenge. “When I first started the business I didn't think I'd be able to sustain it because of the amount of time I needed to spend on it.  I realized that I had to find ways to automate and outsource in order to maintain a good balance between work and family,” she said. Elward feels lucky that she found a partner vendor that has been incredible to work with. In addition to managing all aspects of fulfillment for her, they also support customer service which has freed up her time tremendously.

Like many others, Elward tells aspiring mom entrepreneurs to make sure their business venture is something they are passionate about. “It’s easy to get burned out, but you can overcome it if you believe in what you are doing,” she said.

“I’ve been passionate about recycling all my life, and that's really what spurred me to start and continue to manage Castle Ink,” Elward said.

Castle Ink is marketed through a solid mix of organic search optimization and social media. Elward said she has amassed an extensive knowledge of the art of optimizing a site to maximize traffic from search engines (a discipline known as SEO). “The biggest "hit" for Castle Ink has been the effective implementation of search engine optimization, especially on Google. What really makes this a "hit" is that I manage to do this without spending more than $1,000 a year in total marketing,” she said. “I feel incredibly lucky to have built a multi-million dollar business that is able to grow without spending much money at all on marketing,” Elward added.  To this day, Castle Ink still relies on organic search engines for the overwhelming majority of traffic.

SEO & Why You Want to Be Listed in Market Mommy’s Directory

Google the phrase ‘directory of mom owned businesses.’ Go ahead; try it!  I’m proud to say that one of the first organic links that appears {below the advertisements} is a link for Market Mommy. I have worked extremely hard since our site’s launch in June of 2009 {and before} to improve the SEO. This is significant and important to you for two reasons.

Exposure. If someone Google’s to find a directory of mom-owned businesses, chances are they are going to click on the top links that appear. That is great news for you if you are listed in our directory. The chances that your link will be found via a Google search are higher than it would be if you’re listed in many other directories. Personally, I think mom business owners that don’t list themselves in our directory are crazy. After all, it is completely free! And, the upgraded image ads that appear on the main page directory are as low as $10 a month. {ask us how!}

SEO for YOU. Part of the way that you build strong SEO is by having other strong page ranked sites link back to you. Being listed in our directory is one great way to do that. We have a Google Page Rank of 3, which is pretty decent for a site of our kind. Having your link on our website is a benefit to you and will help Google index you higher. Again, it’s free to be in our directory and our low-cost advertising options would just be an added boost to your SEO.

SEO is important for a variety of reasons. It obviously will increase visibility of your company if you’re easily found by the search engines. It also builds credibility when you’re indexed high. In addition to listing your business in our free directory, and others like it, there are many easy and cheap things you can do to increase your SEO.

Our marketing consultation is a great way to learn more about SEO and we have one of the lowest hourly fees around. Just $25 will get you an hour of great one-on-one coaching! I think that’s a definite bargain considering I just Googled the phrase ‘marketing consultation for mom owned businesses’ and links to Market Mommy appeared three times on the first page alone. I’m pretty confident that our SEO efforts are paying off, let us help you too!
